Description:
Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a way of preparing for entry into other educational programs. ABE courses can also be taken for personal interest. The Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour has designed an ABE program that has four levels, each of which is the adult
equivalent of a secondary grade in the British Columbia school system.
Advanced Certificate: Equivalent to BC Grade 11. Prepares students to enter the provincial level or to go into some vocational programs.
Students must complete four courses: one English course, one
mathematics course, one science course, and one option. Choose from the following list:
ENGL 024 Advanced English or
ENGL 028 Advanced English Skills
MATH 024 Advanced Mathematics (algebra and trigonometry) or
MATH 105 Industrial Mathematics (Electrical) or
MATH 106 Industrial Mathematics
BISC 023 General Biology or
PHYS 024 Introductory Physics

and one of these:
BISC 023+ General Biology
BUSM 131 Accounting I
CHEM 024 Introductory Chemistry
DTEC 020 Introduction to Data Technology I
EDCP 020* Education and Career Planning (Advanced)
FREN 020 French I with
FREN 021 French II (both French courses must be taken)
MATH 024+ Advanced Mathematics
PHYS 024+ Advanced Physics
SOST 028 Canada and the Contemporary World.

+ Provided these have not already been used to fulfil the science or mathematics requirement.

* Provided EDCP was not used to fulfil the requirements for an
Intermediate Certificate.


Entry requirements:
Applicants should be 18 years of age. Under certain conditions those aged 16 or 17 are eligible to enrol.

Teleconferencing.

Administrative information:
The Adult Basic Education Advanced Certificate consists of four courses.
